Silhouettes - When there is a light side, there is always a darker side....
ENGuest: Bart

NC: Nice to catch you for an interview. As first tell us a litte bit about the band Textures !

Textures(Bart): Hello! We're a band since 2001, since then we have produced 3 albums and done several European tours, now we're still going fullspeed with a European tour last month with Aborted and Neaera, and plans for next year promise a lot already. We have played festivals like Summer Breeze (DE), Brutal Assault (Cz), Hellfest (FR) en Lowlands (NL), and the end of this year we'll do a clubtour through Holland again. Busy times, but excellent times, haha!

NC:
To describe the Textures music is difficult and cant be fixed on 1,2 Styles. Please describe us your music !

Textures(Bart): Powerful experimental metal is the most short name you can give it!

NC:
Your music is multifarious, and the arrangement structures are realy far away from the basics. Tell us a litte bit about your inspiration and creativity ?

Textures(Bart): Yes, we have always been fan of all sorts of music, metal is just one of them. We love the different styles of music that everyone in our band personally listens to, and combine them to one style we all like; Metal. The song structure is what we think is the most important thing of a song; it has to tell a tale, and not like the pop-song standards tale you already know when you hear the first part, but an interesting tale that takes you to places you have never been before, that is what we try to accomplish for ourselves. So we listen to artists like Björk, Peter Gabriel, or on the other hand, classical music, for example.

NC:
The last album "Drawing Circles" was produced by yourselves. Did you do it again on "Silhouettes" ?

Textures(Bart): Yes, Jochem has his own recording studio, Split Second Sound, and we can always rely on them to record our albums. Especially since Jochem is also the guitarist, we can really focus on which sound we want to have, and we have the time in the studio to do that. The studio is being transferred at this moment, so next album we will have an even bigger studio to do our work, so that looks promising!

NC:
The new Album "Silhouettes" was released in april. Tell us whats behind the album title "Silhouettes" ?

Textures(Bart): It resembles the battle between light and dark, it shows that, when there is a light side, there is always a darker side; the shadow that will arise beneath it. The lyrics are stories of inner personal struggles between the dark and light side within oneself, and all negative and positive aspects that come to surface when one is struggling.

NC:
How is the feedback from the mediapress about the new album "Silhouettes" ?

Textures(Bart): The reactions are very positive, from most of the reviewers we read, they say Silhouettes is the best album untill now. From every country we get positive reviews, and we see it at the shows as well, lots of people screaming along the lyrics, even last tour at shows in Switserland and Austria, it's crazy!

NC:
Tell us a little bit about the songwriting process and the recording sessions from "Silhouettes" ?

Textures(Bart): Short after Drawing Circles, we started writing for Silhouettes already. So a half year before we went into the studio, we had a lot of material to work with. 2 months before the studio we worked on the songs full-time, to fit the seperate ideas into a whole. We recorded the stuff in 2 months, we had quite a lot of time to experiment, to really search for a sound that fitted the songs. After those recordings, the album was mixed in 1 month. It was hard work, but it payed off very well, we think.

NC:
Whats behind the lyrics in "Silhouettes". Tell us a litte bit about your lyrics ?

Textures(Bart): Eric has taken care of all the lyrics this time, making a mix between poetry, Edgar Allan Poe symbolics and a bit medieval sickness, haha. Again, they resemble the struggle between light and dark, and they flow along with the music, as it gets more chaotic, or, more serene at certain times.

NC:
How did Textures coordinate all that dynamics and specials in your Songs live on stage ?

Textures: Live we mostly play the same as on the album, everything is there, we use our guitar effects, and there are synths, so a big part of the ambience of the album can be realised. Of course, there are some parts where the cd is more layered maybe, but when we play it live, you don't actually miss it, because the most important core is there. Next to that, we practice a lot to make the rhythms as tight as possible, only then it has the maximum impact..!

NC:
Textures toured lately with Neaera and August Burns Red. Tell us a litte bit about this Tour ?

Textures: We toured with Aborted and Neaera, actually, and played 1 show with August Burns Red. The tour was fantastic, the guys of Aborted and Neaera were awesome, and a good team as well. Everything went very smooth, was arranged very decent, and we crushed many places together, haha! We played a lot of shows in Germany, a few in Switserland and Austria, and 1 in France, and 1 in Holland.

NC:
Is it the first time that you play the new Songs from "Silhouettes" live on stage ? And how is the feedback from the crowd ?

Textures(Bart): No, we have been playing the songs since May this year already, so we are quite used to playing them already. The reactions are very good, since the new songs are just a bit easier to follow, so more people can headbang to it haha. Right now, we can already see that the crowd favorites are: Laments of an Icarus, and Storm Warning.

NC:
Whats planed for the future time, after this tour and for the next year ?

Textures(Bart): We do a clubshow tour in November December this year; 12 more shows in Holland and Belgium, that is the last of this year. Early next year it's possible that we tour through Europe again, Germany for sure! Next to that, there are some options for Czech Republic, Poland, but also more the sounth of Europe; France, Spain and Portugal are parts we HAVE to go back to, because the people there go crazy when we come over haha.

NC:
Thank you so much for your time and the feedback, cheers.... You have the last words......

Textures(Bart): To all the fans in Germany that have supported us by coming to our last shows on the tour; thank you very much! It is you guys where we do it for, you make it possible for us to go on..! We'll be back soon, we love the German beer + crazy metalheads, haha! Greets Bart
